Assessed $5,000 penalty for incident involving Brown in first period Thursday

NEW YORK- Pittsburgh Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement

, for spearing Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown during NHL Game No. 704 in Los Angeles on Thursday, Jan. 18, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 6:57 of the first period.
The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.
